Basil D'Oliveira

... played for 'coloured' sides in South Africa, but emigrated to England in 1962 with the support of John Arlott (and others). He joined Worcestershire in 1964, and became a British citizen. After making his Test debut in 1966, he was one of Wisden's Cricketers of the Year for 1967.

His selection to tour South Africa in 1968–9 was highly controversial. He was initially omitted from the touring party, ostensibly because of concerns that his bowling would be ineffective there, but selected as a replacement after Tom Cartwright withdrew because of injury. The MCC eventually cancelled the tour, after South African Prime Minister B. J. Vorster claimed that the selection was politically motivated.
